Signs from the Universe?
Reminders with a sense of humor
In times of spiritual overwhelm, it’s easy for our vision to become clouded. But our spirits were not meant to linger in despair. These are the times we must take our cues from the Universe to embrace the light(er) side and nourish our souls with laughter. Sometimes the reminder signals take the form of signs—both physical and metaphorical signs.
Being a photographer-writer couple, Joe and I were sensitive to visual signs and messages—as a team. Separately, he was 100 percent image-focused and I’m 100 percent word-oriented.
For example, when we arrived in Portland, OR, we parked the car and looked for a coffee shop. It was a cold December day and our eyes scanned the streets as we walked quickly. We turned a corner. I squealed and pointed at a huge sign, jumping up and down like a two-year old.
Joe followed my finger and his eyes lit up. “Great old building,” he said, reaching for his camera.
I was puzzled. “What building?”
“The one you’re pointing to. Look at the detail over the windows.”
I shook my head. “No. I’m pointing to Nordstrom. They always have a coffee shop and afterward we can look at shoes.”
“Oh. Yeah. Didn’t see that. OK, but first let me shoot the building next to it.”
That’s typically the way it went when we’d drive or walk, but at least combined, we managed to cover it all!
Most often Joe would go out to shoot by himself or with another photographer. When we were together and he saw something and stopped, I’d walk ahead or check the street for interesting stores. That’s usually when I had the time to read the sidewalk signs. I like to think of these as messages from the Universe.
Here are some of my favorites from Wilmington, Southport, Saratoga, Portsmouth, New York, and some I don’t remember where. I hope they bring a smile to your face, too.
And last but not least…seen at Yonah Schimmel, Lower East Side, New York

I don't take photos but I often get inspirations for my articles/writing from signs--especially church signs. I keep a list of them and refer back when it's time to write!
I too am constantly stopping to photograph things that have caught my eye (that have gone completely unnoticed by my partner.) I think the act of noticing these things are what give them meaning!
