Traditional Tarot places a good deal of significance on cards that appear in reverse position, or upside down. Although it doesn’t always have a negative meaning, or even opposite of what the upright indicates, a card in reverse tends to instill a bit of fear or trepidation.
Many modern readers, including me, have moved away from this way of interpretation. Just as I prefer Tarot cards with artwork that is more relevant to today, I also lean toward interpretations that reflect the mindset and energy of life in the 21st century.
We live in a dualistic world, so every card already embodies the full range of potential possibilities. That means both upright and reverse meanings are contained within each card. I keep the cards in my decks upright when shuffling, so the appearance of a card in reverse is a signal to me.
Not that it means something bad or negative; it’s merely calling out for extra attention. Colette Baron-Reid calls the “reverse” position “a card in protection,” suggesting gentle attention to a situation is indicated.
Here’s how that works out in today’s Spread for the Collective:
Queen of Wands: Positioned in reverse, this is the energy that’s calling out to us. Wands is the suit of fire. The Queen represents power, creativity, bold expression, joy, passion, confidence, and determination. The reverse position in this spread means that she is with you, but perhaps lately you’ve been feeling jealous or insecure about a situation. Maybe you’re feeling fearful about taking a risk or a bold step. Or even that you’re letting what other people think influence your decisions.
3 of Cups: Cups is the suit of water, emotion, family, and relationships. The 3 in this suit is about friendship, community, and harmony with others. Following the reversed Queen of Wands, this card indicates that it’s time to seek help from your friends, family, or coworkers. The company and sharing with others will raise you up from any despair, envy, or uncertainty you may be feeling.
Strength: If you follow the cards’ advice and reach out to others now, you’ll be rewarded with feelings of strength and security. This beautiful card pictures the combination of the gentleness of a lamb with the strength of a lion. The necklace represents heart-based energy balanced by the power of the infinity symbol on her arm. All is possible when love is shared.
The rainbow titanium aura quartz wand magnifies the balancing energy.
This is a powerful Spread for the Collective. It can be received on an individual level and viewed for the bigger picture as well. Aren’t we all feeling a little out of sorts in this rapidly changing environment? In times of uncertainty, the feeling of separateness is magnified. But we are never alone. This spread is a message for the people of the world to heed. We’ll get by with a little help from our friends when we support and respect one another.
